Underway measurements of skin temperature from a ship must be made at a location that is undisturbed by the ship's wake. We made aerial photographs of the Brown during its return to Charleston on 30 Nov 2002 in order to determine the extent of the wake at different speeds. Using these photographs with engineering drawings of the ship, we determined that the CIRIMS could be mounted on the flying bridge and have a clear view of undisturbed water ahead of the bow wake.

This photograph was used to determine the suitability of the four potential mounting locations indicated by the letters A-D. We determined that the at an incidence angle of 40º, a view of the surface ahead of the wake would be achieved by mounting the CIRIMS approximately 12 feet above the deck at location D on the flying bridge.
